Afternoon Getaways: Indoor climbing is a fun challenge for all ages

Indoor climbing is an extraordinary adventure that requires strength, endurance and acute mental focus.

ERIKA: HELLO, EVERYBODY. I HAVE AN AFTERNOON TO ME AND I’M IN THE MOOD FOR ADVENTURE. THERE IS SO MUCH TO DO IN BOSTON AND BEYOND, BUT TODAY I DECIDED TO STAY CLOSE TO THE CITY AND TRY ONE OF THE NEW OLYMPIC SPORTS. TRAIN LIKE AN OLYMPIAN AND TRY YOURSELF INDOOR CLIMBING. LET’S SEE HOW I DO. INDOOR CLIMBING IS AN EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURE, REQUIRING STRENGTH, ENDURANCE AND INCREASED MENTAL FOCUS. IT’S A PUZZLE AND IT’S THE MOST FUN OF CLIMBING. INTEREST REACHES NEW HEIGHTS AFTER CLIMBING MADE ITS OLYMPIC DEBUT AT THE TOKYO SUMMER GAMES. AT ROCK SPOT CLIMBING IN SOUTHIE, NO OLYMPIC PRESSURE, BUT A CHALLENGE NEVERWHERE. MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU DON’T NEED TO BE SUPERSTRONG OR FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE ALREADY TRAINED AND ARE READY TO GO BEFORE YOU GET HERE. ENTER IF YOU THINK THIS MIGHT BE FUN OR I WANT TO TRY CLIMBING. YOU ARE THE RIGHT KIND OF PERSON TO TRY. ERIKA: THIS ROCK SPOT OFFERS COACHING. KELSEY SHOW ME THE ROPES. MY FIRST CHALLENGE, CLIMBING THE BLUE WAY ON THIS VERY HIGH WALL. AN INTERMEDIATE CLIMB. OKAY. WE WILL TRY IT. >> ANY BLUE, YOU WANT TO PUSH WITH YOUR FEET. YOUR LEGS ARE THE POWERHOUSE OF YOUR BODY. USE THIS POWER TO MOVE SLOWLY ON THE WALL AS YOU WAIT AND GRAB. SO CLIMBING IS A LOT ON YOUR LEGS, BUT IT’S ON YOUR FOOT WORK. DON’T BE AFRAID TO STEP ON ANYTHING SMALL AND HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOUR BODY THAT IT WILL STAY ON THE WALL. >> I put you on a challenge and you’re doing great. >> I’M DEFINITELY WORKING. MAYBE I WILL STEP ON THE YELLOW THING. >> YOU WILL PUSH INTO YOUR STRONG LEGS. YOU HAVE THIS. YOU ARE SO CLOSE. REALLY TWO MORE MOVEMENTS AND YOU’RE ON TOP. ERIKA: NOT EASY BUT, NOT EASY. CAN I LET GO? >> YES. ERIKA: MY FOREARMS. I THOUGHT I HAD TAKEN THE CHALLENGE BECAUSE I GOT TO THE TOP, BUT APPEARENTLY I’M SUPPOSED TO GO THROUGH THIS WALL, BUT I CAN USE ANY GRIP. THEN GO THROUGH SOME MONKEY BARS AND ONTO ANOTHER WALL. AND THEN I GET THE GOLDSTAR. TO CROSS IS TO UP THE SIDE, ALSO KNOWN AS A BLOCK. >> YOUR BRAIN MUST THINK DIFFERENTLY NOW, BECAUSE IT’S NOT WHAT CAN I GET NEXT, IT’S HOW CAN I MOVE TO THE SIDE? YOU ARE ON A CRUISE. GOOD WORK. ERIKA: I AM SILENT BECAUSE I THINK. >> GOOD JOB. ERIKA: THE NEXT OBSTACLE, MY NEMESIS. THE MONKEY BARS. I DON’T THINK I HAVE UNDERSTOOD. MY HANDS ARE SWEAT. >> CAN YOU MOVE ONE? ERIKA: Okay. OKAY. >> YOU MADE MOVEMENT, WHICH IS VERY GOOD. ERIKA: WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM CHALK, I’M BACK AND DETERMINED. IT WAS THE CHALK. ON THE FINAL CLIMB AND THE BIG FINISH. SHAYNA: GREAT, ERIKA. AND WHILE KELSEY TELLS ERIKA CLIMBING AS AN INDIVIDUAL SPORT, THERE IS A GREAT SENSE OF COMMUNITY AMONG CLIMBERS WHILE THEY TRAIN. ANTHONY: YOU HEAR A LOT OF CHEERS IN THE GYM, PEOPLE ENCOURAGING EACH OTHER. ALSO, IF YOU CLIMB THE WALLS AT HOME, LITERALLY AND ARE STRESSED, THE ROCK SPOT CLIMBING IS OPEN UNTIL 11 PM AT NIGHT.
