OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — You want to make fitness part of your routine, but you’re just not a fan of the gym.
But what if you try a fun hobby that also helps you sweat?
You can do just that at Approach Climbing Gym.
“The people of Omaha need something they’re passionate about,” said Sarah Joy Allen, owner of Approach Climbing Gym. “They need a fun, non-boring fitness routine.”
Allen said the best part of the job is seeing others light up when they reach the top of that mountain.
“It kind of boils down to that ah-ha moment,” Allen said. “That ‘I can do that’. And I used to be really excited about that and I still am, 20 years later I still am.”
But, to the surprise of 3 News Now presenter Vanessa Villafuerte, the climb was no picnic.
She said she was shocked to find that climbing is not only a physical challenge, it also presents a few mental obstacles.
“We focus a lot on communication, that ‘I can’ attitude,” Allen said. “If you don’t think you’re going to reach the top of the wall, you’re not going to reach the top.”
At the end of the day, you choose your mountain peak.
“It’s just about pushing yourself,” Allen said. “Resetting your limits, understanding your limits and just deciding how far you want to go.”
Allen said you can burn up to 1,000 calories per hour. But also, be prepared to overcome your fear of heights.
You walk away feeling empowered and proud to move your body and challenge your mind.
And the good news is that rock climbing is for everyone and everyone.
“We have members ranging in age from 2 to 70,” Allen said. “If you want to try rock climbing, it’s very accessible. You don’t have to be a certain body type, or a certain age, or a certain whatever, you just have to want to be a climber You have to want to try rock climbing.
So if you’re looking for a new challenge, head to the Approach Climbing Gym.
Allen said the Approach Climbing Gym is an educational facility dedicated to the sport of rock climbing.
It’s a members-only facility, so those interested in trying it out can make an appointment on their website.
