Ice Climbing

The Central Tower of Paine was first climbed in 1962 during a vicious battle to make the first ascent between British and Italian teams. The British team of Don Whillans and Chris Bonington were ultimately successful, beating the Italians by just 20 hours to the summit. The Central Tower is the most sought after summit in the Paine region. The phallic shape, perfect red granite, and accessibility lure both climbers and trekkers alike to the region. From the summit, the Pacific Ocean and the Argentine summit of Fitzroy are visible on a clear day. From Campamento Japanese(Japanese Camp), a strenuous 5 hour approach is made to the base of the climb. The climbs wanders up the initial 1200 feet via a series of splitter cracks and dihedrals. There are two or three sections of 5.11, but most of the climbing is 5.8-5.9. After a large ledge and possible bivy site is reached, the climb rambles onto the exposed East Face, climbing steep 5.9 cracks, and tops out on the summit ridge. A 400 foot traverse with moves up to 5.8 is then made to reach the true summit.

Attempts on the peak will be made in lightweight one day pushes. Climbing time on the route is 8 to 10 hours, and the descent takes about 4 hours.
